Private equity and private credit are becoming increasingly accessible beyond traditional institutions, which has big implications for business owners. On one hand, it opens new opportunities to invest in private markets, diversify wealth, and potentially gain higher long-term returns. On the other, it changes the financing landscape—many companies are choosing to stay private longer, relying on private equity or private credit instead of going public or borrowing from banks. For business leaders, this means two things: you may gain new avenues to raise capital for your own ventures, and you’ll also face a more competitive environment where private funding drives growth in your industry. Understanding how alternatives work isn’t just about investing—it’s about positioning your business to take advantage of (or compete within) this shift in how capital flows through the economy.

Banks are leaving most alt investments to private markets according to Wealthsimple, here are some ways you can raise it.

Actionable ways to access alt capital:

1. Private Equity Funds & Firms – If you’re looking to scale or restructure, PE firms can provide both capital and operational expertise. Business owners should research funds that specialize in their industry and understand what value beyond money they bring.

2. Private Credit & Direct Lending – When banks tighten lending (like we’ve seen post-2008 and again recently with higher rates), private credit funds can step in with loans. These may carry higher costs but often come with more flexible terms.

3. Evergreen & Pooled Vehicles – Newer investment structures allow smaller businesses to tap into capital without needing to meet the huge requirements of traditional PE deals. Exploring platforms that pool investor money can make funding more accessible.

4. Networking with Alt Managers – Many private market managers operate across both institutional and retail channels. Building relationships through events, industry networks, and professional advisors can help business owners gain visibility and access to these deals.

5. Preparing Your Business for Capital – No matter the source, businesses must present strong fundamentals: clear financials, scalable operations, and a defined growth plan. Alternative investors still expect disciplined execution and ROI.
